ChatGPT card declined? Why it happens and how to pay anyway

“Your card was declined” is one of the most common messages on ChatGPT’s upgrade page, and the card itself is often fine. OpenAI charges in US dollars through an online card checkout, and a lot can go wrong between that checkout and your bank. Here are the usual causes, what to try first, and what to do when no card goes through.

Why OpenAI’s checkout declines a card

• Your bank blocks the payment. A first payment to a foreign online merchant, in dollars, often trips a bank’s fraud rules. The charge is refused before OpenAI sees it.
• 3-D Secure fails. If your bank’s confirmation screen or app notification times out or isn’t approved, the payment is declined.
• The card type isn’t accepted. Some prepaid, virtual or local debit cards are refused, even with enough balance on them.
• Foreign-currency limits. Many banks cap or block card payments in foreign currency, a common situation in countries with currency controls.
• Billing details don’t match. A billing country or postcode that doesn’t match your card’s can be enough for a decline.
• Too many attempts. Several failures in a row can trigger a temporary block on the card.

What to try first, in this order

1. Check your banking app for a blocked or pending payment, approve it, and turn on online and international payments if they are off.
2. Enter the billing address exactly as your bank has it, in the card’s country.
3. Try another card, ideally a credit card from a large bank.
4. Subscribe from the mobile app: the App Store or Google Play bills you, with the payment methods your app store account accepts.
5. Wait a day after several failed attempts before trying again.

Paying from a country with currency controls

In countries with currency controls, such as Nigeria or Pakistan, the card is often not the problem: the bank caps or blocks payments in US dollars. Ask your bank whether international online payments in dollars are allowed on your card, and what the monthly limit is. If they aren’t, another local card rarely changes anything. What to avoid
