# How to pay for ChatGPT without a credit card

Published 2026-09-23. A credit card is the usual way to pay for ChatGPT Plus, not the only one. Five alternatives, what each one needs, and which works when nothing else does.

## The short answer

- Many **debit cards** work; if yours doesn’t, **app store billing** in the ChatGPT app is the next thing to try.

OpenAI’s website asks for a card to upgrade to ChatGPT Plus, and a credit card is the smoothest option. It isn’t the only one. Here are five ways to pay without a credit card, roughly from the most common to the most private.

## 1. A debit card

## 2. App store billing

In the ChatGPT app on iPhone or Android, the upgrade is billed by the App Store or Google Play. Your app store account is funded with its own payment methods, such as gift cards or other options offered in your country, so you never enter a card with OpenAI.

## 3. A prepaid or virtual card

Prepaid and virtual cards work when the checkout accepts their card range. Keep enough on them for each renewal: the plan is charged again every month.

## 4. A card funded with crypto
